What golf clubs does Alabama superstar Nick Dunlap use? An in-depth look at what’s in the bag of the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event in 33 years

Everyone remember the name: Nick Dunlap. The 20-year-old made history at The American Express as he became the first amateur to win a PGA TOUR event in 33 years. The last to do so before Dunlap was Phil Mickelson in 1991 at the Northern Telecom Open in Tucson, Arizona.

Dunlap was the only amateur in the 156-player field and after the Alabama sophomore shot a record-breaking 60 on Saturday he took a three-stroke lead into the final round. His round matched the lowest recorded by any amateur at a Tour event.

After his breathtaking round of 12 under par he held on to see out a one-shot victory over Christiaan Bezuidenhout. The South African birdied the 18th in the penultimate group ahead to keep pressure on the young American, but Dunlap made par on the 72nd hole with a great up and down to secure the title.

Unfortunately, Dunlap will not get to collect the $1.5 million (£1.2 million) first-place cheque as an amateur. The money will go to Bezuidenhout after the South African’s final-round 65.

Although he missed out on the money, by virtue of his American Express win the 20-year-old has accepted his membership on tour. Dunlap is exempt on TOUR through to the end of the 2026 season.

For 2024 he will be exempt for the season’s remaining seven Signature Events, THE PLAYERS Championship, and all Full-Field Events in 2024 He’s also exempt for The Sentry in 2025. Dunlap – who had missed the cut in his previous three events on the PGA Tour – now has a two-year exemption on the circuit as well as entry to the 2024 Masters, US Open and Open Championship.

“If you would have said, ‘Hey, in five days you’re going to have a PGA Tour card or an opportunity for two years’, “I would have looked at you sideways,” said Dunlap after his victory.

Even before the win, Dunlap was in esteemed company as he joined Tiger Woods in 2023 as the only male golfers to win both the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur titles. The sophomore has also won the Northeast, North, and South Amateurs, along with the Walker Cup, and earned All-American honors in his Freshman season at Alabama.
